From theory to practice: LIFE RESYSTAL guides European hospitals to adapt to climate change

The LIFE RESYSTAL project, launched in 2021, has reached a pivotal milestone in its mission to fortify European healthcare facilities against climate change. In late 2023 and early 2024, training sessions were held with pilot hospitals to provide a deep understanding of climate adaptation issues for hospital infrastructure, test a preliminary version of the tools created by LIFE RESYSTAL partners, and collaboratively construct adaptation pathways.

Now, the content of these training sessions on the LIFE RESYSTAL toolbox is publicly available in four EU languages – English, French, Italian, and Spanish – marking a significant step to tailor climate adaptation concepts and tools to healthcare settings, and to ensure widespread accessibility for healthcare facilities across Europe.

Healthcare professionals across Europe can now access the content of this training that aim to raise awareness on the impacts of climate change on health infrastructure and support them in assessing and addressing climate risks.

The LIFE RESYSTAL toolbox

The LIFE RESYSTAL toolbox is a digital climate adaptation planning system that supports healthcare professionals in conducting a climate risk and vulnerability assessment on their healthcare facilities and developing an adaptation action plan.

Divided into seven modules,  the toolbox addresses critical areas such as climate hasard identification, vulnerability and risk assessment, cost-benefit evaluation of adaptation solutions and crisis management. This holistic approach ensures that hospitals are prepared for a wide range of climate-related challenges, in the short, medium, and long run.

Training sessions on using the toolbox

In order to enable the project’s pilot hospitals to use the toolbox effectively, project partners Actierra created a training programme and, alongside partner RINA Consulting, held hands-on training sessions with the pilot hospitals of Millau and Saint-Affrique (France), Bari (Italy), and Ourense, Verin and O Barco de Valdeorras (Spain). These trainings sought to provide a deep understanding of climate adaptation issues for hospital infrastructure, test a preliminary version of the tools created by LIFE RESYSTAL partners and collaboratively construct adaptation pathways. This practical experience is crucial for translating complex climate data into actionable strategies for hospital resilience.
